About My Skills - Converting careers to new industries:

Converting careers to new industries:
My training in career-change began in San Diego, California in the early 90's converting military careers to the civilian workplace. This required sorting through giant heaps of information to discover just what the person was suited for outside his/her military duty. Hidden in those stacks of papers were personnel reviews that gave me a wealth of information. Why? Because within those critiques, the reviewer always told me about the good qualities of my client.

I found it was typical for people to remember the negative opinions, but to forget positive statements, made on their behalf. Probing a little deeper with my clients, I found that behind those good qualities were natural talents. I used these to point out strengths at the top of the resume as well as a source of information to guide my client in the direction best suited for a work-life balance in his/her new civilian life. With a forward thinking focus, I would write a resume geared for that particular workplace and job description.

Next- Refining Career Change working with Banking Careers

In early 90's, the recession hit California as it did in every city across the nation. This brought me new groups of people needing to transfer skills to new industries. One of the first of these new groups were banking personnel. Remember the bank mergers of the 90's? Banking personnel are highly trained and lowly paid, but they are tremendously loyal to their bank and employer. Naturally, they were devastated at losing their job. Many were so disillusioned that they wanted out of banking altogether. Now suddenly, they found that they needed a resume that would be well perceive by a totally different industry, they were stymied.

When I concentrated on their natural talents to guide them forward, good transitions began to happen. Resumes presented their talents as top transferable skills to new industries and they were perceived well outside their banking industry. Can you imagine the delight of one of my clients who had a $30,000-range salary and landed on the cutting-edge of selling cellular phones making a 6-figure income?

Working With Midlife Careers

Who fared worst in the changing markets?

Those in midlife careers, many of whom had no college education. An example is a client who faced a merger in his telecommunication industry. Worried about lack of a degree, he asked me if he had no education to put down on this piece of paper, could he add that he had sent five children to college? . (See Bill's Case History - Midlife Career Change)

Two steps became necessary for (1) changing the client's own perception (2) writing a resume from the perspective of my clients talents, and (3) gearing the resume to encompass his the wide-breadth of knowledge

The ability to brand talents of my clients on a well-formatted resume became my hallmark! To do this required understanding the deeper issues involved in the lifework balance of my clients. Condensing this information to a resume format that placed them head and shoulders above their competition became my mission.

Listening to my clients at a level beyond their job description was paramount to the total picture of resume writing. Thus, resume writing quickly evolved to discovery of what made my clients great and how to use this information to make the turn-in-the-road for their next career move. An important companion to my resume service became: Coaching.
